Fairfax magazines corner weekend market
Fairfax’s two weekend lifestyle magazines have cornered the New Zealand market, taking the two top readership spots for newspaper-inserted magazines.
The latest Nielsen National Readership Survey shows Sunday magazine, carried by the Sunday Star-Times*, has grown its readership by almost 5% over the past year, and is now read by 567,000 people a week.
And coming in at second place for the sector is Fairfax’s new Your Weekend magazine**, distributed with the weekend editions of its three largest daily papers – the Dominion Post, The Press and Waikato Times. Launched in September last year, it is read by 482,000 people, according to the readership survey for the 6-month period ended March this year.
Fairfax Magazines general manager Lynley Belton said the results showed that Fairfax and its editorial teams had their finger right on the pulse of what New Zealanders wanted to read at the weekend, and were delivering it through both magazines.
“Sunday magazine has been going from strength to strength for several years, and it’s gratifying to see that is continuing.
“Your Weekend was launched to complement its host newspapers and because New Zealanders wanted informative, entertaining and challenging reading to relax with over the weekend.
“In gaining almost half a million readers in just six months Your Weekend has obviously provided them with what they want.
“It’s a stellar performance that has exceeded all our expectations and we’re looking forward to it continuing to grow over the next six months.”
Your Weekend’s quality was recognised at the recent Qantas Media awards where it received the Best Newspaper Inserted Magazine Award.
