New glacier hot pools a hit on the West Coast

A selection of hot pools fed by pure glacial water set in lush rainforest has proved a winning formula for The Glacier Hot Pools in Franz Josef.

Open since November last year, The Glacier Hot Pools has become one of the most popular attractions on the West Coast of the South Island, according to Marketing Manager Kerry Walker.

“We’ve had a dream start with visitor numbers well and truly exceeding our expectations,” she said. “We’re also getting fantastic feedback with customers soaking up the tranquil atmosphere and feeling totally rejuvenated after their visit, which is exactly what we were aiming to achieve.”

Owned and operated by tourism pioneers Ngai Tahu Tourism, The Glacier Hot Pools was established to offer a combined tourism and wellbeing experience.

The stunning complex is enveloped in lush native vegetation and designed as a haven of natural tranquility. There are three main pools and three bush-based private pools. Future developments will include additional main and private hot pools.

Great care was taken during the building process to preserve the stunning natural environment, right down to GPS tracking of rainforest tree roots, and an ethos of care for the environment is crucial to the ongoing operational management of the complex.

Ms Walker said the attraction perfectly complemented the many other activities currently available on the West Coast.

“The pools and the setting are the perfect way to rest and rejuvenate in Franz Josef after a busy day of activities, either during the day or into the evening under a canopy of stars,” said Ms Walker.

The Glacier Hot Pools is Ngai Tahu’s first start-up project of this scale in many years, and complements existing Ngai Tahu owned or managed attractions on the West Coast, which include Franz Josef Glacier Guides and the Hukawai Glacier Centre, an indoor ice climbing wall suitable for visitors of almost any age and ability.
