New meters will give customers control of costs
Advanced meters will give customers more control of costs
Genesis Energy is giving its customers the power to manage energy use and costs through advanced meters. It will see 500,000 in place in the next five years.
The rollout, which began in February 2009, means Genesis Energy will be capable of offering tariffs which reflect real time energy costs to consumers, enabling them to manage their consumption during peak and off-peak periods. The units are future-proofed to accommodate changing technology.
Genesis Energy is confident that the new advanced meter technology it is using can deliver to customers more choice and control over their consumption and cost of electricity. It expects to offer the first product of this type through advanced meters in the second half of this year.
Genesis Energy’s General Manager Retail, Dean Carroll, said he is confident that the Advanced Metering technology being deployed by the company is leading edge.
“The products and services associated with Advance Metering need to be developed over time in partnership with customers to ensure a safe and a successful deployment of this new capability. We expect that both the customer’s requirements and the technology will develop and that our solution can develop with this. The first challenge is to introduce tariffs that reflect daily price changes. This is a big step for both retailers and customers and we expect to achieve this later in the year. Other innovations will follow and we expect a lot of these will be driven by customer requirements.”
