Michael Jackson's music sold out around NZ

“Michael Jackson CDs and DVDs sold out within hours around Newmarket and nationwide,” says the head of the Newmarket Business Association, Cameron Brewer, today.

"Music retailers told me that people were literally grabbing what they could. It seems that Thriller and his Greatest Hits went out the door first, followed by literally anything with Michael Jackson's name on it.

"Apparently purchases were being made before his death was even confirmed. Our local retailers tell us their sister stores nationwide were also out of stock within a few hours," says Mr Brewer.

"Music retailers have urgently requested more stock, with Sony and their distributors now working over time to have the shelves stocked again for the weekend trade.

“The problem for the record company and retailers is that his death was so unexpected. They simply can’t deliver the product fast enough. Supply will struggle to keep up with demand in the coming days.”

“Retailers are going to have to stock their shelves as quick as they can because this story is not going away. The more people hear the music over the next few days, the more they'll want to buy it.

“What’s more, because Michael Jackson goes back to the 1970s there are potentially three generations of New Zealanders who now want a CD or DVD,” says Cameron Brewer.
