South Island Sale Catalogue Now Online

The catalogue for New Zealand Bloodstock's South Island Sale of 2YOs & Mixed Bloodstock is NOW online.

The Sale, held annually in Christchurch, will this year comprise of 204 lots including 170 unbroken two-year-olds, 19 broodmares, seven yearlings plus four unraced stock and four racehorses.

Staged in mid-Winter against a backdrop of the towering snow capped Southern Alps, the one-day Sale provides buyers the opportunity to do business, catch the best of the South Island's flat and jumps racing, and enjoy a weekend on the ski slopes. This year there is also the annual Mercedes Awards following selling on Friday 7 August.

The South Island Sale, held at Canterbury's Agricultural Park in Christchurch, is unique in that it offers unbroken two-year-olds just a month before Spring Racing in Australasia really starts to wind up.

As the breeding ground of the immortal Phar Lap, the South Island has proven a hotbed of potential and value with recent successes including Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly. Purchased by Liam Sutcliffe Holdings, he has now won over 33 times his NZ$75,000 purchase price at the 2004 Sale from Paritai Stud.

Former Kiwi-based galloper Benelli is also flying the flag for the Sale in Melbourne. Now trained by Richard and Bevan Laming, he recently won the MRC Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1600m), putting a solid one-and-a-quarter-lengths ahead of himself and Scenic Scene with Davcon back in third. Both place-getters backed up a week later to win.

The winner of nearly NZ$170,000, Benelli has already notched up almost A$60,000 from his three Australian starts to date. Christchurch owner, Michael Manion, purchased him at the 2004 South Island Sale for NZ$12,000 from Selwyn River Stud.

Asia too has witnessed tremendous recent success from the South Island Sale, including John Foote's purchase of More Bountiful (Van Nistelrooy x Centaine Gu Li, by Centaine) for Hong Kong in 2006.

More Bountiful has won six races in his debut Hong Kong season for John Size and his owners, the Lucky Lord Syndicate, just one win off the Hong Kong record of seven victories in a season. His biggest victory came in the Group 2 Hong Kong Chairman's Trophy, with his combined victories seeing him accrue some HK$6,335,000 (approx. NZ$1,375,354) in prize money this season, quite an achievement given his $38,000 price tag from Little Avondale Stud.

Add to that this season's Singapore Group 3 Merlion Trophy winner Beau Brummel (My Halo), Malaysia's Group 1 Selangor Gold Cup and Group 1 Perak Derby winner Kiko's Return (Minardi), Macau Summer trophy winner Six Aces (Felix the Cat) and Macau Derby winner Ka Lam Fortune (My Halo), all amongst the South Island horses making an impact in the East.

The South Island Sale's international success is replicated at home with success stories like Eel Win, Moveovr, Thimble, Cherry Creek, Inferno, rising star Star Son, and Lesley Brook all graduates of the Christchurch sale ring.

Lesley Brook is the perfect example of how quickly a South Island Sale purchase can come to fruition as early as the burgeoning spring Trainer Terry Kennedy bought the daughter of No Excuse Needed for $28,000 in August 2008, had her broken in, and then preceded to race the filly to black type success just three months and one week later.
