Gull supportive
of government move on new regulations for truckies
Auckland, 1 July 2009 – Gull announced today that it fully supports the Government’s announcement to increase the load carrying capacity of trucks on New Zealand’s roads.
The Minister of Transport announced that trucks would be allowed to be a combined weight of 50 tonnes, up from the present limit of 44 tonnes.
Dave Bodger General Manager for Gull in New Zealand says that the Government’s decision is very sound and is welcomed by Gull.
“It is a great decision and will lead to significant efficiency gains, thus better service to the motorist and less pressure on fuel prices,” says Dave Bodger.
Bodger adds that the proposed new weight limits for trucks on the New Zealand roads make a huge amount of sense especially from an environmental point of view.
“Gull is a sustainable company and as a result of this decision, the Gull fleet will make fewer trips around New Zealand as we will have more fuel on every load. Currently all of our trucks drive to the service stations not fully loaded to meet the current regulations. Under the proposed changes we believe we will dispatch around 10% more petrol and diesel every load on the same trucks.”
Bodger goes onto to say that the proposed changes will be a win win all round and eventually all these savings will be passed onto Gull’s Kiwi customers.
“It will save fuel in the trucks, reduce carbon emissions from our operations even further, cut back on the number of trucks on the road, lead to a long term saving in the amount of investment in new trucks and make the whole business more productive. “
Gull will be making a submission in support of these productive changes and looking forward to 2010 when the new laws will be enacted
