South Island Sale String of Success Continues

Victories in the Waimate Cup and Australasia's leading hurdle events over the weekend ensured the upcoming South Island Sale remained prominent in the minds of buyers

Sunday saw Lot 203, Dream By Day (City on a Hill x Russian Slice, by Godswalk), waltz away with the Goodeve Waimate Cup (1800m), just a month before she will be offered as a racehorse at NZB's South Island Sale on Friday August 7.

Now a winner of four races, Dream By Day is a young black-type mare with good residual value following her second placing in the Listed CJC New Zealand Bloodstock Airfreight Stakes. Further, Dream By Day is a half-sister to stakes-placed Fellini, while Champion NZ 2YO Moonshine (Sound Reason) and famous galloper Our Waverly Star also hail from her immediate family.

Currently raced on a lease expiring 31 July by B R Bunting, R F Hughes, K B & T A Rhodes, Mrs D L Templeton & G S Wilkinson, Dream by Day will continue in training with Riccarton-based Kevin Hughes with a final start before her Sale planned for August 1 in the colours of her owner Adrian Clark.

Clark commented, "I believe the best is ahead of her as she is only now reaching full maturity (rising 5YO) and she showed great fighting qualities to win the Waimate Cup.

"Dream By Day will race on the first day of the Grand National Carnival in a Rating 90 over 1800m and will be offered for genuine sale a week later from the consignment of Ranganui Farm.

"I purchased her as a yearling out of the paddock from Curraghmore Stud. She is a lovely correct mare with a kind temperament"

Esker Lodge will offer the only City On A Hill in the unbroken 2YO session of the 2009 South Island Sale.

Lot 79 - Chestnut Colt - City On A Hill x Swirl (Woodborough) - Esker Lodge

· From a young half-sister to three winners including stakes-placed Ewano, this colt hails from a family with depth including stakes winners Sweet Vamp, River Queen, Te Akau Prince, and St Kentigern.

Australasia's hurdle race features, the Wellington Hurdles and the Moonee Valley Leslie Short Memorial Hurdle, were both captured by South Island Sale graduates, a credit to the versatility and durability of the South Island breed.

Counter Punch (Yamanin Vital x Tripartite, by Tawfiq) took his career victories to nine in the hands of Tommy Hazlett on Saturday in the $50,000 Stella Artois Wellington Hurdles (3400m).

A winner of two on the flat, Counter Punch cruised over all obstacles whilst applying pressure on the flat with his natural galloping ability.

The $6,000 purchase has now accrued over $150,000 in prizemoney for his owners Mrs A P Duncan, Messrs M D Ormsby, M K Oulaghan & S J Speedy from the Mark Oulaghan stable.

White Robe Lodge sold Counter Punch to Mark Oulaghan at the 2002 South Island Sale, and will offer the only eight colts by Yamanin Vital at the 2009 event. Highlight lots by the Group 1 NZ Derby and Group 1 Wellington Cup producing sire include:

Lot 26 - Bay Colt - Yamanin Vital x Party Player (Defensive Play) - White Robe Lodge

· This colt is the first foal of a three-time winning half-sister to Group 2 WATC CB Cox Stakes winner Jack Daniels. This is also the family of Group 1 winners Turf Ruler and Philomel.

Lot 34 - Bay Colt - Yamanin Vital x Personify (Personal Escort) - White Robe Lodge

· Out of a full-sister to top South Island mare Perceptible, a winner of eleven races up to Group 3 level, this colt's family has produced Group 1 winners Prized Gem and Nom De Jeu.

Lot 146 - Bay Colt - Yamanin Vital x Fonseca (Straight Strike) - White Robe Lodge

· A colt with all the right crosses, this colt is out of a winning Straight Strike mare who is in turn out of a two-time winning Beaufort Sea mare. Yamanin Vital's Group 1 winners are NZ Derby winner Cut the Cake (ex Straight Strike mare) and Wellington Cup winner Cluden Creek (ex Beaufort Sea mare).

Brian Johnston and Fran Houlahan were well rewarded for their strong support of the South Island Sale when Pentiffic (Pentire x Sailing High, by Yachtie) scored in the $70,000 MVRC Leslie Short Memorial Hurdle (3300m) on Saturday.

Amongst Victoria's leading hurdlers, Pentiffic's victory was his second in 2009 after taking out the $100,000 Oakbank RC Yalumba Hurdle by eight lengths in April. His seven length victory on Saturday further emphasised the gelding's bright future in racing which has seen him score four times thus far for over A$150,000 in prizemoney.

Simon and Cindy Hampton's The Pines Thoroughbreds sold the son of Pentire for $36,000 to Bruce Elkington at the 2005 South Island Sale. Their 2009 draft of six includes:

Lot 53 - Chestnut Colt - Hawkeye x Set the Pace (Groom Dancer) - The Pines Thoroughbreds

· A direct descendant of Group 1 winner Tiptoe (Pakistan), this colt is a half-brother to smart three-year-old filly Set the Tempo (Pins) who placed behind Group 1 NZ Oaks winner Jungle Rocket in the Listed ARC Sunline Vase.

Lot 92 - Bay Colt - Towkay x Ali Rosa (Personal Escort) - The Pines Thoroughbreds

· This colt is the first foal of winning Ali Rosa, a half-sister to eleven time winner Narousa (Khozaam) whose victories included the Group 3 NZ St Leger and the Group 3 Dunedin Gold Cup.

New Zealand Bloodstock's unique South Island Sale of unbroken two-year-olds and mixed bloodstock will be staged at the Canterbury Agricultural Centre, Christchurch, on 7 August.

Catalogues are available from reception@nzb.co.nz.
