Multipronged approach to youth unemployment

Positive multipronged approach to youth unemployment

Business NZ is endorsing the multipronged approach to youth unemployment announced today.

Chief Executive Phil O'Reilly says a multifaceted series of initiatives is more likely to succeed in reducing the current bulge in unemployment numbers of 18-24 year olds.

"It is good to see an inclusive programme involving business, communities, polytechs and the defence force all focused on the core problem of low skills in young people.

"The Job Ops programme supporting entry level work with small and medium sized businesses should help many young people get onto the first rung of the employment ladder.

"It will be important to ensure the scheme is properly managed and monitored and that proper support networks are in place for both employees and employers taking part in the scheme."

Mr O'Reilly said member companies of Business NZ would be encouraged to take part.
