TVNZ News & Current Affairs Qantas Award Finalists

TVNZ News & Current Affairs Programmes Take Bulk Of Qantas Award Finalists Placings

Monday 10th August, 2009

The finalists for this year's Qantas Film and Television Awards have been announced and TVNZ’s News and Current Affairs Programmes dominate the nominations taking 23 of the 33 finalist placings.

TVNZ has claimed all three of the finalist placings in three of the 11 categories including Best News or Current Affairs Presenter, Best Current Affairs Reporting (daily programme) and Investigation of the Year.

ONE News (6pm) and Tonight are finalists in the Best News category.

“I believe it’s a testament to the talent and professionalism of our staff that we have done so well in this year’s list of Finalists”, says Head of News and Current Affairs, Anthony Flannery.

“It’s great news that the prestigious category of Best News or Current Affairs Presenter will be fought out in-house between Paul Henry, Kevin Milne and Andrew Saville.”

TVNZ's Close Up has also taken all three nominations for Best Current Affairs Reporting for a daily programme.

The Sunday Programme has taken two of the three nominations for Investigation of the Year, and the Close Up Team has been named as the third finalist in this category for its scrutiny of an Auckland nursing home earlier this year. Producer, Kate McCallum worked under cover as a care-giver in the home and tested positive for the Super Bug following the expose.

“The consistently high quality of our new political show Q+A has been recognised by the Qantas Judges by being named as a finalist in the Best Current Affairs series along with the Sunday Programme.

The Q+A programme acknowledged by the Qantas judges was only the third episode of the highly regarded political show. It featured TVNZ Political Editor, Guyon Espiner interviewing Finance Minister, Bill English and Paul Holmes interviewing former Prime Minister, Helen Clark and her husband Peter Davis.

TVNZ Breakfast presenter, Pippa Wetzell will co-host the Qantas Award’s Gala Night where the winners will be announced on September the 5th at the Civic Theatre in Auckland.
