Pete’s Shed Inspires The Launch Of Tempranillo

They say a shed is to a bloke what a handbag is to a woman. In Pete’s shed you won’t find a comb though. It’s a place where radical ideas become classic inventions and where problems are solved.

To honour this bastion of Kiwi ingenuity, Yealands Estate has launched a new range of wines under the banner ‘Pete’s Shed’, and the first of these is a Tempranillo from the 2008 vintage.

“Pete’s Shed wines will be about innovation – tinkering away in the vineyard like you do the shed. It could be experimenting with a lesser-known wine like Tempranillo or taking a different approach to popular styles,” says Pete.

In keeping with Yealands’ philosophy, small parcels of fruit will be nurtured to make their way, in the most sustainable manner, from the vine to the bottle.

Winemaker Tamra Washington says she has enjoyed the challenge of producing this inaugural wine for Pete’s Shed, as Tempranillo is usually grown in warmer climates like its native country Spain.

“This is a lighter style of Tempranillo – in both fruit and body. The wine spent eight months in a mixture of new and old French barriques and has intense dark prune, fig and eucalypt characters” says Tamra.

Tamra says the wine’s rustic undertones make it an ideal pairing with tapas and red meat dishes while Pete reckons it’s the perfect pizza wine.

Pete’s Shed Tempranillo is available in limited quantities and can be purchased from selected wine retailers and leading restaurants and bars. It has a recommended retail price of $19.95

About Yealands Estate:

Peter Yealands began developing New Zealand’s largest privately-owned vineyard six years ago in the rolling foothills of the Awatere Valley, Marlborough with a 100 per cent commitment to the environment.

His unwavering vision has translated into a winery valued at $45 million alone, featuring advanced green production technology alongside a host of innovative ideas devised by the Yealands team.

Yealands Estate anticipates total energy savings of 949,000kWh in its first year of operation. Put into perspective, this saving represents the total annual energy consumption of more than 118 New Zealand households.

Yealands wines launched to great acclaim in August 2008, and have collected 33 awards in the first year, which goes to show that being green also means making a great drop.
