Directions for
research funding promising
Changes in the way science is funded will get better results for the economy, says Business NZ.
Research, Science & Technology Minister Wayne Mapp today made public a number of key themes for future public funding for the sector.
Business NZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly said they were broadly in line with what business has been seeking - simplification of the funding process, clearer linkages between those providing the funding, and better value for the money spent.
“The science system and its funding have a profound impact on innovation and productivity, the drivers of economic growth,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“Being a small country with limited financial resources we must direct our funding where it will return most value.
“Business will look forward to clear priorities being set for that funding
“For companies and individuals with ambition to compete in high-technology endeavours, it will be extremely helpful to have a clear statement of priorities by the Government.
“The Minister has indicated he will now be talking with stakeholders in the science and technology system including business, in order to bring change to the system, and we welcome the opportunity to contribute.”
