NZBIO welcomes RS&T priorities

NZBIO welcomes RS&T priorities

The Government’s recognition that research, science and technology will underpin the goal of growing the New Zealand economy has been welcomed by NZBIO Chief Executive Bronwyn Dilley.

“As the organisation representing biotechnology and life sciences companies in New Zealand NZBIO is well aware of the opportunity that exists to increase economic returns to this country through the sector,” Ms Dilley says.

“A key part of this will be enabling the already excellent science taking place in New Zealand to connect with business and generate commercial outcomes.

“New Zealand’s life science sector has the ability to deliver real and measurable benefits to the New Zealand economy in its own right through the development of products for a wide range of uses. This sector will also enable other industries to generate income beyond what is currently possible, through applied science and market driven innovation.

“NZBIO’s members have been clear about the challenges they are facing, such as the need for long term funding and simplified Government systems. The fact that this has been listened to by Government and a commitment made to address these concerns will be welcomed by the industry.

“The contribution and potential of the sector is internationally recognised. The release of the OECD Report: The Bioeconomy to 2030, Designing a Policy Agenda, has provided a clear mandate for the need for the international community to support biotechnology for future economic security as well as environmental benefits and improved healthcare options.

The OCED states: “Biotechnology offers solutions for many of the health and resource based problems facing the world. The application of biotechnology to primary production, health and industry could result in an emerging bioeconomy where biotechnology contributes to a significant share of economic output”.

“NZBIO believes the life science sector has an important role to play in helping meet current and future challenges in the environment, human and animal healthcare and the economy. The world is facing one of the toughest economic landscapes seen in our lifetime. It is the decisions made during this time that will be the key to New Zealand’s long term prospects.”
