Easier entry for Australians a boost for business

Easier entry for Australians a boost for business

An Auckland business group says easier travel trans-Tasman travel arrangements announced by the Prime Minister today will provide a timely boost to business.

“These changes are significant because Australians make up the biggest chunk of the visitor market by far. Over one million Australians now visit New Zealand, which is up nearly 10% on the past two years despite the international recession,” says Cameron Brewer, head of the Newmarket Business Association.

“Easier access to New Zealand will mean more Australians will visit friends and relatives, holiday, and travel for work. This is very welcome and timely news for New Zealand businesses.”

“Over the past year when overall tourism numbers have been tracking down, Australians have been arriving in record numbers. The growth in Australian visitor numbers will now only gather more speed. That’s great for the tourism and hospitality sectors but also a plus for retailers.

"In the past Kiwis have gone to Australia on shopping trips. With less travel hassel and cheaper flights, this is a great opportunity to attract more Aussie shoppers over here. Given the Australian dollar, shopping in New Zealand is good value for money.

Mr Brewer says these latest developments will reignite the debate over a single trans-Tasman currency.

“A single currency is not on the horizon, but it certainly just got a little closer.”
