Would you like carbon neutrality with your coffee?

Would you like carbon neutrality with your coffee?

Hutt Valley business Celcius Coffee has become the first coffee roaster in the country to be certified under the carboNZeroCert TM programme’s small enterprise certification scheme.

This means Celcius Coffee has measured and reduced their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and then offset the remaining unavoidable emissions by purchasing verified carbon credits from credible New Zealand projects.

Celcius Coffee is an artisan coffee roasting company with a reputation as an exceptional roaster providing coffee with a social and environmental conscience.

"In 2007, we were the first coffee company in New Zealand to participate in the carboNZero programme and become carbon neutral. We have since progressed to achieve carboNZero small enterprise certification which has been the ‘icing on the cake’ for our business,” says owner Stephanie Fry.

“We’ve won business and industry awards, we roast 100% organic and certified Fairtrade coffee and we’re members of the Sustainable Business network. Becoming certified as carbon neutral through the carboNZero programme small enterprise certification scheme completes our story because it shows how seriously we view environmental issues like GHG emissions, climate change and sustainability.”

The carboNZero programme is the world’s first internationally accredited GHG emissions management, reduction and offsetting certification scheme and the only accredited ISO 14065 verifier outside of the United States.

Celcius Coffee’s main source of emissions comes from the use of vehicles. The company has reduced this by purchasing a smaller more economic vehicle and may again reduce their car size and report and monitor their petrol consumption in order to identify areas for even further reductions and savings. Other emissions for Celcius Coffee included freight (16%), LPG (6%) and electricity (12%). Deliveries or freight under 2kg was excluded in the inventory because they were minimal and account for less than 1% of the emissions profile.

In total, Celcius Coffee offset 16 tonnes of CO2 through carbon credits from the TrustPower Tararua II PRE (Projects to Reduce Emissions) wind power project. The offset covers GHG emissions due to freight that were not included in the organisational inventory but will be reported and verified in future inventories.

“This certification means that Celcius Coffee consumers can enjoy their coffee knowing that in one small way, they’re supporting local efforts to reduce GHG emissions and maintain the environment.”
