Nick Main Lands Global Sustainability Role

Deoitte’s Nick Main Lands Global Sustainability Role
Chairman of Deloitte NZ moving to London

Deloitte New Zealand chairman Nick Main has been appointed to the position of Global Managing Partner, Climate Change and Sustainability Services for Deloitte Touche Tomatsu, and will move to London later this month to take up the role.

Deloitte New Zealand chief executive Murray Jack said the appointment is a feather in the cap of the local firm.

“It’s an indication that New Zealand and New Zealanders have an important role to play in the global sustainability debate. Of course, at a personal level, it’s a tremendous appointment for Nick in terms of moving his influence and knowledge to the global stage for Deloitte. He has made a huge contribution to the debate over climate change and sustainability for many years and this is a fitting recognition of his achievements.”

In the new role, Mr Main said his focus will be on co-ordinating Deloitte’s efforts at a country level, and helping clients respond to new laws in the sustainability, emissions trading and climate change areas. “Regulatory frameworks are being established in the United States, Australia and New Zealand and the current regimes are being strengthened in the UK and Europe so there are many opportunities to assist with responses to the risks, costs, obligations and opportunities being created.”

He said he was looking forward to the challenge of the new role, bearing in mind that Deloitte has 62 member firms in 140 countries. “It is an area I been passionate about for many years so it will be a privilege to work with those involved in influencing and implementing the global response to the sustainability issue, and working to develop articulate and well-respected points of view for Deloitte.”

Mr Main has been a partner at Deloitte since 1985 and was chief executive of the New Zealand firm from 2000 until 2005. He was appointed as chairman of the firm in 2005.

As well as being a member of the Deloitte Global Corporate Responsibility Council, he has also been involved in several high profile institutions in New Zealand including The New Zealand Institute, The Committee For Auckland, the New Zealand Leadership Institute, and the NZ Business Council for Sustainable Development where he has been chair for the last three years. He also served on the Climate Change Leadership Forum.

Despite the move to the northern hemisphere, he will remain a partner of the New Zealand firm of Deloitte. He starts the new role in London on 2 September.
