Where does the idea for one of the world’s leading travel companies begin? For best mates, Darrell Wade and Geoff Manchester, it was with a six-month trip across Africa in a converted rubbish truck. Back in 1988 Darrell and Geoff were young professionals uninspired by the daily grind, and yearning to hit the open road. After backpacking in Europe and Asia they were dreaming of Overlanding through Africa. Back then, there was only one option for a journey like theirs - coordinating it yourself. They spoke to friends and placed a newspaper ad to put together a group of 14 naïve, but enthusiastic, backpackers. They pooled their money and bought the truck for AU$3,000, and spent six month converting it into their home on wheels. And the 'intrepid' adventure began with a 6 month overland through Africa. They got robbed, the truck broke down and they battled many lake-sized potholes, but the thrill of the adventure and the sheer beauty of the Africa planted the first seeds of an idea in their minds.
Six months later and back in Melbourne, campfire chat had turned into a fully-fledged business plan and Intrepid Travel was born. Geoff cashed in his super, Darrell borrowed money off his parents and with one typewriter they wrote the first Intrepid brochure with a trip to just one destination - Thailand.
Fast forward 20 years and much has changed. Today, Intrepid takes over 70,000 people to 105 countries around the world. It employs close to 1,000 people in 23 companies on six out of seven continents. But while much has changed, at its essence Intrepid remains the same company it was 20 years ago. Simply put - operating great adventures is what they continue to do best. It’s been quite an adventure for these two best mates.
