MEDIA RELEASE

Martinborough Vineyard wins Pinot Noir trophy at Tri Nations Wine Challenge 2009

Martinborough Vineyard has won the Pinot Noir trophy at the 2009 Tri Nations Wine Challenge for its 2007 Martinborough Vineyard Pinot Noir. The event, held in Sydney, is an exclusive competition for a hand selected range of the very best wines from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Internationally acclaimed wine writers and judges Bob Campbell MW of New Zealand, Huon Hooke of Australia and Michael Fridjhon of South Africa selected the best wines of each variety from their own country. The judging is then done blind by the three selectors along with Chairman of judges Robert Joseph, to rate the wines in their order of preference.

Martinborough Vineyard Winemaker Paul Mason says the trophy is testament to the commitment to excellence that the whole team at Martinborough Vineyard has to their wines. “Whilst the 2007 vintage had its challenges, a combination of rigorous vineyard management and old vines ensured we produced some superb wines”.

General Manager Janine Tulloch noted next year was the 30th anniversary of Martinborough Vineyard. “This is another stellar achievement in our vineyard’s history of awards and accolades” she said.

Master of Wine, Bob Campbell notes “elegant and yet dense wine …. Powerful and rather linear wine with a very long finish. This is a superb example from one of Martinborough's first division wineries. Super-classy wine made with a light touch.”
