Better outcomes for electricity customers needed

Media release
24 September 2009

Better outcomes for electricity customers needed

Business wants to see an end to ongoing electricity price increases and uncertainty of electricity supply.

Business NZ is endorsing the preliminary report to the Ministerial Review of Electricity Market Performance which recommends more competitive market tools for better outcomes for the customer.

Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly says business understands that secure electricity supply and good infrastructure come at a cost. But he says frequent electricity price rises over recent years have safeguarded neither infrastructure nor secure energy supply.

“We hope the review will lead to more efficient pricing structures and a market that is designed and governed in such a way that threats to supply in dry years are reduced.

“We will keenly watch to see whether greater security of supply and more competitive prices are the outcomes of the review. If these are not forthcoming, more aggressive action may be needed.”
