Property with scale and options in the Wairarapa

A diverse sheep and beef property 40 kms east of Masterton - not far from the Castlepoint coast – is for sale with Bayleys as part of their Spring Country portfolio offerings.

Marketed by Tim Falloon and Lindsay Watts of Bayleys Wairarapa, Forbrae at 4552 Castlepoint Road, Tinui, is a 1390 hectare property with scale that has been farmed since 1980 by the Gaskin family partnership. This partnership involves brothers Peter and Richard and their parents, Albie and Helen (nee Speedy). Albie has farmed Forbrae for 45 years on behalf of the Speedy Trust with the property originally purchased in 1919 by Helen’s grandfather, David, upon her father Rewi‘s return from the Great War in France where he was badly injured.

Forbrae means ‘before the hill’ and refers to the site of the buildings on the terrace, south of the cone-shaped hill.

The property is in four titles and could be available as a whole or with purchasing options.
One option would be 701.4 hectares with two, four-bedroom homes, a four-stand woolshed and substantial outbuildings; while the other option would be 689.5 hectares with separate road access and a generous 280sq m homestead in beautifully landscaped grounds.

The total property has over 110 hectares of fertile river flats and a good balance of rolling to medium hill country making it versatile and workable given the 100 paddocks - with significant investment in permanent fencing made in recent years - and a stock laneway from one end of the property to the other.

Over the last five years, more than 9000 stock units have been run on the farm with potential for future expansion should the currently undeveloped land be gradually improved.

“There is certainly an opportunity here for a farmer with a bit of vision and foresight,” says Mr Falloon.

“Currently, there is not a lot of property on the market in this area – particularly of this size and scale. The property is showing good returns with an established bull fattening operation and consistently docking around 125 percent.”

Stock water for the property is provided by a well-tested large scale water scheme with 60 troughs and a network of dams.

“The larger of the dams – with 5 million gallon capacity – at the northern end of Forbrae - has never gone dry and the rest of the property is well-serviced by creeks, springs and dams,” says Mr Falloon.
Improvements on the property include a substantial 200 ton fertiliser bin on the main airstrip at the southern end of the property, a 4-stand woolshed, a stables/killing house/chiller room, shearers’ quarters, a workshop and grain storage facilities.

“This property could appeal to existing farmers in New Zealand or to off-shore farmers – especially in the UK – looking for a change of lifestyle,” says Mr Falloon.

“Because of its scale, it presents a number of possibilities in terms of operation and with several accommodation options; it could suit an absentee owner wishing to put a management structure in place.”

Forbrae is only five minutes from Tinui town ship with a school and basic services, while Masterton is just 45km away. Given the proximity to popular Castlepoint beach, there are plenty of leisure options for those times when you wish to escape the farming duties.
