Statistics New Zealand selects IBM for imaging services for 2011

Census Imaging services agreement aimed at improving quality and accuracy of 2011 Census

Auckland, New Zealand - 5 October 2009: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the signing of a two-year agreement with Statistics New Zealand, the country’s major source of official statistics, for the provision of imaging services for the 2011 Census. The agreement was signed on June 30, 2009.

Under the two-year agreement, IBM Global Business Services will provide consulting services, systems integration and support services for the supply of imaging services with scanning, recognition and data repair applications.

Statistics New Zealand has selected IBM’s Intelligent Forms Processing (IFP) solution, IBM’s most powerful and flexible forms processing system, which uses Optical and Intelligent Character Recognition (OCR/ICR) and sophisticated data repair technologies to capture images and data from millions of documents.

IBM’s IFP solution allows Statistics New Zealand to efficiently scale from small to very large processing volumes. For the 2011 Census, which is scheduled for Tuesday, 8 March 2011, this means increasing scale to process more than four million paper forms in just a few months.

The strategy for the 2011 Census is to maintain an emphasis on data quality and consistency. IBM’s patented IFP technology will improve the quality, accuracy and effectiveness of the Statistics New Zealand 2011 Census data collection and business process, while integrating it with existing applications.

IBM was also chosen by Statistics New Zealand for the provision of imaging services for the 2006 Census.

Under the new contract, Statistics New Zealand remains in the rank of IBM clients worldwide using IBM’s IFP solution for census imaging services.
