Trade experts tap into growth opportunities

Trade experts tap into growth opportunities in India

18 November 2009

Trade specialists and key industry players will gather on November 26th to discuss the range of growth opportunities offered by the Indian market at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce's Inside Trade: India event.

Experts from NZTE, Chapman-Tripp, the India New Zealand Business Council and Westpac will give candid advice to businesses on the trade policies, legislation and expectations unique to the Indian market.

"India is experiencing exponential growth and is predicted to be the second largest economy in the world by 2050," says Cameron Gordon, International Manager at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. "Its size and proximity to New Zealand in conjunction with an imminent free trade agreement has sparked the interest of an increasing number of Kiwi businesses."

New Zealand's current annual exports to India are worth $653 million making it our 15th largest export partner. Recent trade statistics show that worldwide merchandise exports to India grew by 84 percent in the year to April 2009, compared to New Zealand's 11.3 percent growth over the same period.

However, a report conducted by NZTE on India's perception of New Zealand indicates that Kiwi businesses aren't taking advantage of the growth opportunities in India to the extent of competing countries.

"Clearly there is a huge scope for Kiwi traders to prosper in this rapidly growing market, particularly in emerging niche sectors. However, as in any country, you need to know the local policies, cultural expectations and customs if you are to succeed."

"Inside Trade: India is a step towards strengthening the India-New Zealand trade relationship and encouraging best practice for entering the Indian market," adds Mr Gordon.
