Deutz Marlborough Releases Rare Vintage Wine

Deutz has just released a rare new vintage wine – Deutz Marlborough Prestige Cuvée 2005. It is the first time that Deutz has released its traditional Pinot Noir/Chardonnay blend crafted from one specific Marlborough vintage.

Deutz Marlborough Cuvée is the result of a partnership started between Montana Wines and the prestigious House of Deutz in Champagne in 1988 to combine the intensity of New Zealand grapes with traditional French champagne techniques.

“After more than 25 years, we got to know our vineyards intimately. We know which particular blocks produce the most sensational grapes,” says winemaker Julia O’Connell.

This rare vintage méthode traditionnelle is made from the most intense parcels of fruit selected from two of Marlborough’s oldest vineyards – Renwick Estate and Brancott Estate – during the exceptional 2005 vintage.

“2005 was one of the best years for making a top méthode traditionnelle this decade,” says Julia.

Warm days in September and October ensured a strong, even budburst. The flowering period during December was unusually cool, which brought crop loads into balance. Average rainfall through to January ensured good shoot growth and healthy canopies. A warm February set up the fruit to develop a full, ripe flavour profile over a classic, settled Marlborough autumn.

The grapes for this wine were hand harvested, whole-bunch pressed in the imported French Coquard press, extracting the juice in the gentlest manner to produce a wine of elegance and finesse. All batches were fermented separately and left on lees during malolactic fermentation. Assemblage of the final blend – which is 65% Chardonnay and 35% Pinot Noir, with a small amount of reserve wine – was followed by three to four years maturing in the bottle.

“Deutz Marlborough Prestige Cuvée shows the potential Marlborough has for making truly great méthode traditionnelle,” says Julia. “The wine shows strong, rich flavours with an excellently structured palate and an impressive finish. For me, it is the perfect wine for any special occasion.”

Deutz Marlborough Prestige Cuvée 2005 is a wine of uncommon power, elegance and finesse with an impressive finish. It is now available in selected restaurants and fine wine outlets, RRP $36.95.

The award winning range of Deutz Marlborough Cuvée wines now consists of the Deutz Marlborough Cuvée Brut NV, Deutz Marlborough Cuvée Rose NV, Deutz Marlborough Cuvée Blanc de Blancs 2006 and Deutz Marlborough Prestige Cuvée 2005.
