Queenstown Still Backpacker Favourite

For immediate release

Wednesday November 18, 2009

Queenstown continues to remain firmly on the map for the Australian backpacker and adventure traveller with several thousand seeking advice before visiting here.

Destination Queenstown along with AJ Hackett Bungy and NZONE represented the resort at this year’s Adventure Travel and Backpacker Expo in Sydney last week.

“It’s fantastic to see so many Australians in this important demographic actively seeking advice on coming to Queenstown,” says DQ General Manager Marketing Graham Budd.

“The backpacker and adventure traveller market has proved to be resilient in the current economic climate.

“These expos are a great opportunity to target the Australian visitor especially because those who attend are usually people who are genuinely planning to travel. We also interact with many Europeans who are already on their OE and this year we had a record number of inquiries on staying longer and working in the region.”

Queenstown was among 200 other adventure travel exhibitors from all over the world and expo organisers reported more than 7500 attended this year’s Sydney event.

Mr Budd says while there were a healthy number of younger backpackers seeking information about the resort a considerable amount were actually in the 45 plus age bracket.

“This is often the group whose children have grown up and left home so they have more time for travelling again and are looking for holidays which are a little more adventurous.

“Queenstown fits the bill perfectly offering visitors an inspirational and exhilarating holiday destination where people have a wealth of activities and experiences to choose from.”

Those who stopped off at the Queenstown stand also had their dart skills tested for a chance to ‘Land on Queenstown to Win’ – the lucky winner who hit the right spot snapped up a $500 travel voucher, AJ Hackett Nevis Arc and bungy jump combo and 15000ft NZONE tandem skydive.
