People choose Wellington Zoo at the SBN Awards

Wellington Zoo is celebrating its recent success at the National Sustainable Business Network (SBN) Awards in Auckland, where it picked up the coveted People’s Choice Award on the night.

The Zoo also received a judge’s commendation in the National Trailblazer Not for Profit Award at the prestigious event – held at St Matthew in the City on Thursday 12 November – for its commitment to conservation and sustainability across the entire organisation.

Wellington Zoo earned the right to compete in the competition’s national finals after being named the supreme award winner of the Sustainable Business of the Year and winner in the Not for Profit category at the SBN Central/Southern Regional Awards in September.

The SBN Awards recognises businesses across New Zealand making a real effort to embed sustainability into their everyday operations.

"Winning the People’s Choice Award for our sustainability work means so much to everyone at the Zoo, as our work is centred around engaging communities and our visitors to build a sustainable future for people and wildlife," Wellington Zoo Chief Executive Karen Fifield said.

"It’s fantastic to see that our supporters and friends can see the value of our work and were willing to get behind us in such great numbers.

"We were also pleased that our clear commitment to reduce our impact on the environment from top-down, as well as our efforts to inspire and influence others about sustainability issues, was recognised by the judges. These are areas of our work where our staff have made a huge contribution and feel very passionate about.

"The Zoo’s performance at this year’s SBN Awards underlines our position as an industry leader in sustainability, conservation and learning as well as being a community asset that compels people to care for the environment by taking positive action."

Wellington Zoo is a charitable trust principally funded by the Wellington City Council
