New opportunities for Kiwi businesses

Media Release
Date: November 25 2009

NZ-Taiwan initiative reveals new opportunities for Kiwi businesses

Taiwan’s Vice Minister of Economic Affairs will share insights for Kiwi exporters in Taiwan during his special visit to New Zealand on Friday December 11.

Vice Minister Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang alongside an MFAT trade expert, will discuss growing industries in Taiwan and the potential there for New Zealand businesses at a gathering of the Taiwan Business Leaders Forum. An initiative led by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, the Taiwan Business Leaders Forum aims to strengthen business to business relations between the two regions.

“New opportunities are blossoming for Kiwi exporters in Taiwan,” says Cameron Gordon, International Manager at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. “I would urge businesses to take advantage of the rare chance to hear insights from such a prominent specialist in the Taiwanese market.”

“Vice Minister Kuo-Hsin Liang’s visit in conjunction with the New Zealand Government’s recent decision to waiver visa requirements for Taiwanese visitors staying under three months is a positive step towards stimulating tourism and facilitating trade relationships between the two regions,” says Mr Gordon.

Eugene Chen, Director of the Economic Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Wellington is also optimistic about the opportunities that exist for New Zealand businesses in Taiwan.

“Taiwanese consumers see New Zealand products as being clean, green and healthy. With this good image, business leaders in Taiwan see New Zealand companies as their ideal partners for building their market position aimed at the promotion of safe and healthy food. There is huge potential for New Zealand exporters to sell more products into the Taiwan market.”

Currently, Taiwan is New Zealand’s eighth largest export market accounting for $715 million worth of exports.
