‘Sustainable’ and ‘responsible’ are two commonly used terms but they are terms that have real meaning for Hawke’s Bay’s largest accommodation provider.
Later this month, Kennedy Park Top 10 Resort unveils their $1.2million investment in eco friendly cabins.
The new cabins have been built by local suppliers to help support the local economy and they meet the eco requirements as per the Qualmark Enviro gold practice. Eco savings are made in under floor, exterior walls and ceiling insulation, instantaneous gas water heater, natural gas infinity units and double glazing.
Tourism New Zealand Acting Chief Executive Tim Hunter said New Zealand’s environmental performance was important to visitors and the Kennedy Park cabins ticked all the boxes for what the industry could aspire to.
“Our international visitors are currently happy that we are managing the natural environment well, but their expectations will continue to rise and projects like this are ahead of the demand curve,” Mr Hunter said.
Kennedy Park has set the benchmark as leaders in sustainable tourism. In November 2009 they were awarded the Westpac Chamber of Commerce business award for excellence in sustainable tourism and have attained a Qualmark five star award and Qualmark Enviro-Gold status.
“Given the challenging trading environment New Zealand tourism is experiencing, this investment makes a significant statement to industry partners and customers about the importance of continuing to invest to survive and thrive,” says Mayor Barbara Arnott. “Kennedy Park has done this and gained for both the environment and their own business.”
“Kennedy Park’s commitment to sustainability is a promise upheld everyday, it’s just part of who we are and we do… that makes us extraordinary,” says General Manager, David Aflallo.
