Business opportunities identified by the NZBIO-led delegation to AusBiotech

2009, the largest biotechnology conference in the Asia Pacific region, confirm the importance of making business easier for companies operating in Australia and New Zealand.

More than 50 New Zealanders took part in AusBiotech 2009, representing the biggest ever New Zealand presence at this annual event.

A post-event survey of exhibiting companies revealed a significant increase in the potential value of deals done by the New Zealand delegation. The 14 respondents estimated in excess of NZ$3.5 million could be raised in potential deals following their participation in AusBiotech 2009.

“The potential value of deals done at AusBiotech 2009 shows New Zealand’s ability to partner internationally in this field and the bio-based industries’ potential to boost New Zealand’s economic growth.  It is also clear that international investors are still on the look-out for high quality companies and exciting bio-based opportunities,” NZBIO Chief Executive Bronwyn Dilley says.

 “Australia is an important market and New Zealand’s presence at these events is a critical part of boosting trans-Tasman business opportunities.  New Zealand’s participation in these conferences is also essential if companies are to meet international partners, clients and investors, and to open doors to new business.

“NZBIO fully endorses joint Government moves announced earlier this year to make doing business easier for companies operating in Australia and New Zealand. Any actions that enhance the business environment and support New Zealand companies’ development will benefit the wider economy.”

Over 70% of New Zealand’s export earnings are currently derived from bio-based industries spanning human and animal health, agriculture, horticulture and other natural products. These exports include novel intellectual property, finished products and ingredients for the food, cosmetics, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and medical technology industries bound for global markets and consumers.

“New Zealand’s bio-based industries have an important role to play in helping meet current and future challenges in the environment, human healthcare, primary production and the economy.  They are also a vital part of improving standards of living for this country’s people,” Ms Dilley adds.

“Enhancing our trans-Tasman linkages is a key part of improving business opportunities for New Zealand companies, which is why NZBIO has forged a much stronger and closer working relationship with our Australian counterparts at AusBiotech over the past 18 months. This increased collaboration has several significant benefits, including reciprocal discounted event registration for AusBiotech and NZBIO Corporate Members.  NZBIO will continue to foster this relationship for the benefit of New Zealand’s bio-based industries in the coming year and beyond.”
