ASB targets 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

ASB today announced it would reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by December 2012, based on 2008 levels.

ASB is committed to managing its impact on the environment responsibly and effectively while helping to build a sustainable future for all New Zealanders. “We recognise that the way we manage our business and our resources has an impact on the environment and the community and we are committed to making the right decisions” says Charles Pink.

“This greenhouse gas reduction target forms an important part of our overall sustainable business strategy. It will help to drive ongoing improvements in efficiency and demonstrates our commitment to improved environmental performance.”

ASB’s ongoing programme of environmental initiatives includes:

• upgrades to lighting and air conditioning in offices and branches
• improvements in energy data systems and control mechanisms, leading to improved day to day management of energy use
• automated overnight PC shutdown for all staff
• a range of green technology projects to improve energy efficiency
• encouraging staff to use video and phone conferencing technology instead of air travel
• improving the environmental performance of the ASB vehicle fleet ultimately increasing the number of hybrid vehicles
• a waste reduction and recycling programme
• reducing the amount of paper used internally and on behalf of customers.
