Change of Luck For Lotto’s Luckiest Towns In 2009

The numbers are in, and a new lucky district has topped this year’s table as NZ Lotteries’ number one luckiest district for 2009 – with Masterton the clear winner.

“2009 was a massive year for Lotto and Big Wednesday winners from all around the country – especially with the record breaking $36 million Big Wednesday prize winners capturing the nation’s attention, and hearts, in June,” says NZ Lotteries’ Chief Executive Todd McLeay.

“Furthermore, we’ve dispelled the myth that Auckland gets all the big prizes, by crunching the numbers to find the top districts on a per capita winning basis are south of the Bombay Hills!”

Kuripuni Lotto and Post in Masterton contributed to this year’s result, by selling the biggest prize in NZ Lotteries’ history with Big Wednesday’s $36 million going to a local family in June. They also sold a $5.1 million Lotto Powerball ticket in February.

On a per capita basis, and with almost $50 million* won in 2009, Masterton District won the battle of the towns with a remarkable $2,116 won on average per head of population**.

Waipa District took second place with $433 per capita, thanks mainly to a $16 million Lotto Powerball prize sold by Countdown Cambridge in May, and Gore District was third on $144 per capita – boosted by three First Division Lotto wins for the area last year.

Manukau City, Lower Hutt City, Kawerau District, Thames-Coromandel District, Taupo District, North Shore City and Gisborne round out the top ten.

The 2008 winner, Buller District, still fared well with $85 per head making it 15th out of 72 districts around the country.

“With Lotto Powerball on a roll again, we could soon be getting a sense of what town could win the 2010 crown,” says Mr McLeay.
