Update on braking performance of Toyota Prius
Media commentators in the United States have reported customer concerns regarding the braking performance of the new Toyota Prius, which was released in New Zealand in 2009.
Toyota New Zealand chief executive Alistair Davis says that some customers in the US and Japanese markets have reported a slight delay in braking reaction on certain surfaces.
“Toyota Japan has told us that in some circumstances if the driver applies light pedal pressure, drives over a slippery patch of road and the ABS cuts in – there is a very slight delay in pedal feel.
“Of course the driver will just brake harder and the car will stop, but the momentary delay could be disconcerting for some drivers,” says Mr Davis.
Mr Davis said that Toyota made minor changes to new vehicles being produced from January this year and is considering whether changes should be made to vehicles already built.
“There are 260 Toyota Prius vehicles on the road in New Zealand and we have not received any feedback from owners in connection to this issue.
“We are writing to all Prius owners today to let them know the background to this matter and to reassure them of our confidence in the braking performance of the vehicle,” Mr Davis added.
