BNZ Weekly Overview

BNZ Weekly Overview

Many thanks to those who responded to our survey last week. The results were sent out on Tuesday and showed that the recovery in NZ’s economy is extremely patchy with some sectors such as construction producing good results for some companies and worsening ones for others.

This week the NZD fell to near US 68 cents for a while but has ended back near 70 cents with some optimism that a debt default by Greece will be avoided. Wholesale interest rates have generally eased with still further pulling back of previous thoughts that the RBNZ may start raising the cash rate in March or April. We continue to expect the first change to come in June.
