Riflemans Chardonnay Claims Trophy at Easter Show

For Immediate Release

2007 Sacred Hill Riflemans Chardonnay Claims Trophy at 57th Royal Easter Show Wine Awards

Sacred Hill winery claimed the Champion Chardonnay - New World trophy for its premium 2007 Riflemans Chardonnay at this year’s 57th Royal Easter Show Wine Awards.

Trophies for New Zealand’s oldest wine competition were this year judged by Kate Radburnd, winemaker of C.J. Pask who this year took over from long serving chairman of judges Bob Campbell, while awards veteran and prominent Australian wine judge Mike DeGaris, remained in his role as Deputy Chairman.
Earlier in the month, the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards awarded the 2007 Sacred Hill Riflemans Chardonnay a gold medal, automatically placing the popular wine in the finals.

This wine has already been awarded international recognition this year, winning a trophy at the Sydney International Wine Competition 2010. In 2009 it picked up a gold medal at the Hawkes Bay A&P Mercedes Benz Wine Awards and silver medals in the New Zealand International Wine Show and Bragato Wine Awards. This shows that this wine is improving as it ages.

“We are thrilled to see this vintage once again recognised and honoured by the high caliber of wine judges involved in this competition,” says Tony Bish”, says Senior Winemaker Sacred Hill.

“This is a unique wine in that it is a single vineyard wine produced from 21 year old Mendoza Chardonnay vines. These naturally low yielding vines produce an intense distinctive chardonnay that speaks of its origin.”

Tony says 2007 had almost perfect growing and ripening conditions during the autumn months to provide optimum ripeness.

Riflemans Chardonnay comes from the Sacred Hill Special Selection range which represents the pinnacle of the wineries winemaking craft.
“It’s fantastic to create wines that not only stand out as some of the best produced locally, but are also commercially priced,” says Tony.
“Receiving these accolades year after year confirms the vineyard’s reputation offering a quality approach to viticulture and winemaking,” says Tony.
