EPMU welcomes Air New Zealand jobs move

The EPMU has welcomed the transfer by Air New Zealand of the ATR fleet operated by Mount Cook Airline from Air New Zealand’s Christchurch Engineering facility to Air Nelson. The union has been told that the move will result in 30 new roles in Nelson and 8 new roles in Christchurch as a result of the changes.

The company is using the reorganisation to free up space in Christchurch so they can bid for more 3rd party jet engine work.

“The new jobs in Nelson offer a ray of light to SafeAir workers who have been told that they can apply for the roles but unfortunately there is no guarantee that they will get these jobs,” said EPMU National Secretary Andrew Little. “It is good news for Air New Zealand Engineering as it demonstrates that the operation there is viable and competitive for new business. This also bodes well for the industry as a whole with the possibility of job growth in this area.”

“We will continue to work with our members at SafeAir to take advantage of all opportunities to secure work for them. We will also seek to ensure that any workers transferring to Air New Zealand jobs have their service with Safe Air recognised in their new terms of employment.”

“The Government has floated the possibility of it buying SafeAir or running it as an independent entity, but the EPMU has not been consulted on this and we would appreciate the chance to discuss it before any steps are taken.”
