Auckland Design Company Picks Up Two Pencils at One Show
Awards
Placing Them in World’s Top Ten
The champagne was again flowing at Auckland based multidisciplinary design firm Alt Group’s offices this week, with the company netting two Pencils and two Merits at the esteemed One Show Design Awards in New York on Monday night (New York time).
Now in their tenth year, the One Show Design Awards - which are part of the advertising industry’s most prestigious international awards programmes, the One Show Awards - is a highly respected global competition that honour’s the year’s best in print design, environmental design, corporate identity, publication design and package design with Gold, Silver and Bronze Pencils.
Alt Group was ranked tenth agency in the world, beating off thousands of entries from around the globe to take home the two lauded Pencils – a Bronze Pencil in the Booklet category and a Silver Pencil in the Publication Design category - for their work on the ‘We Make Light’ booklet for global lighting manufacturer, Selecon, and ‘The Vigneron’, a project designed to commemorate the life of Alt Group director Ben Corban’s grandfather, Najib Corban, of the Corbans wine dynasty.
The Vigneron project, in which the company designed and published a beautifully crafted hand-bound book and a limited edition series of 100 hand numbered magnums to celebrate Najib’s 100 years, has already been awarded a number of national and international prizes, including two Certificates of Typographic Excellence at the New York TDC56 awards, a Tokyo Type Directors Club award and three Golds and a Silver at last year’s national BeST Design Awards. Just last week, the project was awarded a Design Distinction in I.D’s 2010 Annual Design Review in New York.
‘We Make Light’, a booklet that was developed as part of a broader brand development project for Auckland based theatre and architectural lighting company, Selecon, has also received prior accolades, including the supreme graphic design prize at last year’s BeST Design Awards and Merit at this year’s Art Director’s Club Awards in New York.
In addition to the Pencils, Merits were awarded to Alt in the Branding category for Formway Design’s ‘Thinking outside the chair’ book, and in the Typography in Design category for ‘OUCH’, a holey poster designed to draw attention to climate change that was created using magnifying glasses and the sun to burn the word “OUCH” into paper.
This is the second year in a row that the Ponsonby based studio has picked up Pencils in the New York based awards, with the company last year winning a Silver and a Bronze Pencil, and two Merits.
The One Show Design Awards – one of the three programmes that make up the One Show Festival Week – were held on Monday, May 10 at the landmark IAC Building in New York City.
