New Category for 2010 Roading Excellence Awards

New Category for 2010 Roading Excellence Awards

Roading New Zealand has added a new category to its 2010 Roading Excellence Awards, with entries opening Monday, May 24.

Last year saw a large number of entries in the category for large projects costing $4 million and above, which resulted in a $5m project competing against another costing $350m. This year those entries will be split between the Greenstone Energy Award for a Major Road Project with value greater than $25m, and the Goughs Excellence Award for a Medium Road Project between $5m and $25m.

Also included this year is the award for a Minor Road Project less than $5m in value, and the InfraTrain New Zealand Industry Best Practice Awards for People, Procurement and Environmental Sustainability.

The Roading Excellence Awards promote leadership, excellence and best practice in the provision of land transport infrastructure. Entry to the awards are open to all organisations involved in roading projects carried out within New Zealand, and may include NZTA, local authorities, contractors and consultants.

Roading New Zealand chief executive Chris Olsen expects a strong response to the 2010 awards.

He said government investment in infrastructure had helped support the sector during the economic downturn but contractors had been aware they were operating in a tough climate and responded admirably. “With increased pressure to provide value for money, it has been heartening to see people looking to innovate and maintain high standards.”

The awards offer organisations a chance to be recognised and acknowledged for their work, and also to review past projects and gain inspiration for the future.

Andrew McRae, project director for the 2009 Supreme and Major Road category-winning Northern Gateway Alliance, said entering the Roading Excellence Awards was a valuable experience which provided “great recognition amongst our peer group”.

“It also gave us the opportunity to look at our project in a different light and reflect on what we had achieved,” Mr McRae said.

Registration forms are available from the Roading New Zealand website www.roadingnz.org.nz .

Entries close on July 16.
