Harcourts New Zealand’s top auctioneers announced

Harcourts New Zealand’s top auctioneers announced

Harcourts New Zealand’s Auctioneer of the Year award has been won by North Shore-based branch manager and auctioneer Robert Tulp, while the title of Most Promising Auctioneer of the Year in New Zealand’s largest group has gone to Christchurch’s Daniel Coulson.

The pair won the coveted titles and associated trophies in the open and novice auctioneering divisions respectively, following two hotly contested competitions held during the recent Harcourts New Zealand conference.

Mr Tulp, who is based in the Glenfield office operated by successful multi-office Harcourts franchise Cooper & Co, has been calling auctions for about 10 years. He won the Auctioneer of the Year award following a two-day competition last week that involved 19 experienced Harcourts auctioneers and culminated with four finalists calling an auction in the Christchurch Town Hall in front of three judges and a crowd of hundreds at the annual Harcourts New Zealand conference.

The other finalists were: Dunedin-based Harcourts business owner and auctioneer Chris Kennedy, two-time competition winner Andrew North who is a shareholder, branch manager and auctioneer with Cooper & Co on the North Shore, and West Auckland-based sales consultant, auctioneer and trainer Ian Keightley.

Meanwhile Mr Coulson, who only recently completed Harcourts’ novice auctioneers training, won the Most Promising Auctioneer of the Year title ahead of 15 others from around New Zealand involved in the Novice Auctioneers’ Competition.

Harcourts National Auction Manager Phil McGoldrick says the quality of auctioneers in both competitions was superb.

“Harcourts has a strong auction-focus and the time, effort and investment made in and by our auctioneers shone through in the calibre of auctioneering showcased in the competition this year.”

Mr McGoldrick says Mr Tulp’s success, in what was only his second ever auctioneering competition, is a credit to him.

“Robert has worked really hard over the past year to hone his skills and that paid off, helping him to win the competition ahead of the many other talented auctioneers he was up against.”

Meanwhile Mr McGoldrick Harcourts says the Most Promising Auctioneer of the Year, Daniel Coulson, is definitely a rising star in the industry.

“Daniel is focused on becoming a full-time auctioneer in future and with his performance in our novice competition he’s off to a winning start. He’s certainly talented and with ongoing training and experience I’m confident he will achieve considerable success as an auctioneer.”

Mr Tulp says he is thrilled to have earned the title of Harcourts Auctioneer of the Year having won the open competition.

“I’m fortunate to work in a franchise with a big auction focus and a healthy competitive environment between the auctioneers in our team, so that helps bring out the best each week and definitely helped prepare me for the competition, which I am very proud to have won.

“It was great to see our top auctioneers in action and to end up being named the winner was very rewarding. It’s a bit of a dream come true.”

Mr Coulson, who is based in the Christchurch City office of multi-office Harcourts’ franchise Grenadier Real Estate Ltd, says he is delighted to have been named Harcourts New Zealand’s Most Promising Auctioneer.

“I’ve been interested in auctioneering for some time and after two years as a sales consultant I was keen to take a step in that direction, so I did the Harcourts Novice Auctioneers course a few months ago and then worked closely with Harcourts auctioneers Phil McGoldrick and Roger Dawson.

"I think the fact that I’m good with numbers is definitely a strong point for me and according to the judges I projected my voice well, but it was still a surprise to win the competition. Hopefully it’s a great start to what will eventually be a full-time auctioneering career,” he says.

Established in 1888 Harcourts is New Zealand’s largest real estate group, with around 180 offices nationwide, more than 1800 residential, rural, lifestyle and commercial sales consultants and a growing property management team. Harcourts is also the fastest growing real estate group in Australia and has offices in Fiji, Indonesia, Singapore, China, South Africa, Zambia and Botswana too.
