Growers to learn latest in fight against grapevine fungus

Hawke’s Bay grape growers will be up with the latest research findings in
the fight to manage Eutypa dieback in grapevines at this year’s Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers Inc. winter workshop seminar being held at Mission Estate Winery on Friday 25 June.

Key note speaker is leading Australian research scientist, Dr Mark Sosnowski from the South Australian Research & Development Institute (SARDI) and renowned expert on Euytpa, a fungal disease that reduces productivity in vines and requires drastic pruning to assist recovery.

“We are very fortunate and excited to have someone of Mark’s caliber to present the latest research findings in this area,” says Emma Taylor from Villa Maria who is helping to arrange the free workshop.

The morning presentation begins at 10am and Dr Sosnowski will be discussing the latest fungicide trials for pruning wound protection, paints and pastes, biological controls, sanitation, remedial surgery and cultural practices that reduce the risk of infection by Euytpa.

Dion Mundy of Plant & Food Research, Blenheim will be updating growers on the status of this disease in New Zealand.

Dr Mark Sosnowski will be conducting a vineyard walk and talk for growers at 1.30pm in the afternoon.

The Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers winter workshop seminar is held annually in conjunction with the Hawke’s Bay Silver Secateurs and Young Viticulturist of the Year competition which are also taking place at Mission Estate on Friday 25 June.

To register for the winter workshop email info@winehawkesbay.co.nz or call Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers on 876 3418.
