Record entries for Young Designer competition

Registrations for the third annual Newmarket Young Fashion Designer Award have closed with a record total of 72 entries received from 15 -18 year olds around the country.

"We are thrilled with the response and it show's interest is growing. Last year we got 61 registrations. This year we have a total of 37 schools from throughout the North Island participating. We have entrants from the likes of Wellington, Kapiti Coast, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Hastings and Waikato. What's more 19 of the 72 entered last year," says organiser and Newmarket's marketing manager, Lea Worth. 

Mrs Worth says all entrants will now prepare a creative journal that will be judged by representatives from Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design. The top 35 entrants will then be advised to proceed to construct their  garments which will be judged in September. 

The public will be able to view the 35 finalist garments at the Rialto Centre from 27 September to 10 October for the popular People’s Choice Award. The winning designer will be announced at a gala event at Epsom Girls’ Grammar on 17 October. 

The winner of the 2010 Newmarket Young Fashion Designer Award will fly Qantas for two to New York with four nights’ accommodation courtesy of Business World Travel. He or she will get to work back stage at the Karen Walker Show at New York Fashion Week and will receive $1,000NZ spending money. The winning designer will also receive a tuition grant towards Year One & Year Two of study for a Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design Scholarship, and a two-week design assistant internship working alongside New Zealand designer Vicki Taylor in the Taylor Workroom.
 
"It's a huge prize and no other competition for budding designers comes close. It's a once in a life-time opportunity and Newmarket as the fashion capital of New Zealand is proud to be backing the next generation," says Lea Worth.
