World Cup Spirit to Lift Reported Workplace Blues

A new SEEK Watercooler survey released today shows that six months into 2010, 70% of New Zealand employees haven’t seen any improvement in workplace morale.

Employee Satisfaction and Motivation Survey data released by SEEK earlier this year revealed that 50% of New Zealanders reported negative morale at their workplace and despite the general growth of business confidence, latest survey results reveal that optimism is not reflected amongst employees.

“With 7 out of 10 Kiwis keeping a look out for other opportunities, employers need to make staff happiness and job security a priority. Last month the SEEK Employment Index showed an 8% increase in applications for jobs advertised on seek.co.nz – if you want to keep good staff, you need to start focusing on morale as it is a key factor in retention.”

However, it seems there are some businesses that are prioritising their staff’s happiness with simple but effective morale boosting initiatives.  A SEEK survey has found that a World Cup sweepstake is a popular initiative with 30% of New Zealand workplaces participating in their own.

“It doesn’t need to be a big, grand gesture – a simple sweepstake or a morning tea to recognise team achievement, these are real examples of what companies are doing to boost staff morale and make employees feel valued,” says Ms Duff.

“The World Cup has certainly captured the imagination of New Zealanders and smart businesses are leveraging that interest to engage staff. Tying your team activities to a World Cup theme is a simple and effective way of providing a positive and fun working environment that in turn improves staff morale.”
