Gull Declines to Join the “Easy Money” With
the Premeditated Start to the Ets
Auckland, 30 June 2010 – Gull announced today that it would not be moving its petrol and diesel prices up this week even with the ETS increasing the cost of fuel.
“There will be some easy money made by oil giants increasing their fuel prices at the outset of the ETS but Gull say give Kiwi motorists a break” says Dave Bodger, General Manager for Gull in New Zealand.
Bodger says there is no need to act now despite several of the oil giants already indicating that they will be increasing petrol prices by 3 to 3.5 cents per litre and diesel by 4 cents per litre on Thursday July 1 when the ETS comes into effect.
“This is very premeditated behaviour and interesting that there have been very widely circulated letters from the oil giants noting the price increase in the last few weeks. This underlines that the oil giants are not in touch with the public and it is easier to crank that price up than do nothing.
“Gull talks to its customers and very few are aware that the new ETS legislation will increase fuel prices. We will hold off any change until at least next week giving our loyal supporters the chance to make savings of around 4 - 5 cents per litre over the opposition. If and when we do make a change our biofuels (that are partially carbon exempt) will increase by less than the cost of ordinary fuel.”
Bodger concludes “Does anyone remember the oil giants protesting against biofuels in the last few years? Clearly doing something that would moderate prices for the consumer is not in the repertoire of the major oil companies!
“Gull pioneered biofuel three years ago in New Zealand in preparation for the ETS and to save our customers money. The big companies do nothing but moan for a few years and then when the time comes simply say to their customers – ‘here is the price increase’.”
