New Zealand A World Leader in Per Capita Lawyers

New Zealand A World Leader in Per Capita Lawyer Stakes

One in 391 people for kiwi lawyers

LawFuel - The Law Jobs and News Wire - New Zealand has the third greatest number of lawyers per head of population, according to LawFuel calculations.

Lawfuel, the legal jobs and legal news website said New Zealand is third behind the United States, with one lawyer per 265 people and Brazil with one per 326 of its citizens. New Zealand, with 10,800 lawyers comes in at one in 391.

Next on the lawyers-to-head of population is Spain (one in 395), UK (one in 401), Italy (one in 488), Germany (one in 593) and France (one in 1400).
There are 10,867 practising certificates that have been renewed this year, which is about 500 fewer than the figure last year.

"Last year there were 11,365 practising certificates issued - so that appears to show a shortfall of around 500 or so," a Law Society spokesman told LawFuel. "However, it seems that quite a few inhouse counsel and semi-active lawyers haven't renewed this year, meaning there hasn't been a significant exodus of practising lawyers."
