TrueNet launches broadband measurement services
TrueNet, launched today, is a company dedicated to the accurate measurement and reporting of broadband performance. TrueNet is a joint venture between Catalyst IT, leading open source IT experts, and Jonette Consulting, a company specialising in broadband reporting analysis.
“The key benefit is that with accurate measurement information, content and service providers can better direct their investments, and internet users, large and small, can learn more about the level of service they are getting and what internet service they should reasonably expect”, says Director John Butt. "This is a critically important service to realising better internet performance for New Zealand businesses and consumers.”
With a comprehensive range of performance measurements, TrueNet plan to offer their customised data analysis to a range of interested parties such as ISPs, public bodies, large content providers and price and performance comparison websites.
TrueNet started operating quietly with an initial group of 40 volunteer testers. While this number already enables interesting comparative statistics and insights, an increase of up to 300 volunteers is planned offering a coverage that exceeds similar models in the UK and USA.
Some statistics are already being published – see www.truenet.co.nz - to demonstrate the capability of TrueNet’s testing methodology. Truenet’s approach to home broadband uses a measuring router based in ordinary homes to perform measurement tests.
Says John Butt: “Initial results indicate that most broadband consumers are missing out on the current capability of broadband in New Zealand, often due to settings and practices that the consumer can either influence or fix. For example, some testers have already doubled their internet performance by simply re-locating their internet connection to another jackpoint.”
TrueNet enters this market with a stated mission to improve the Internet experiences for NZ business and consumers. Says Director Mike O'Connor: "Of course we expect TrueNet to be successful commercially, but we will also measure our success by New Zealand businesses and consumers being better informed and getting the Internet experience they need.”
