Emirates Adds Madrid to Flurry of Route Launches

Emirates has rounded off a series of European route launches by starting flights to Madrid, the airline's 104th destination and 25th in Europe.

Amsterdam was Emirates' first new route into Europe in 2010, launching on May 1. Prague followed on July 1. Elsewhere, the airline opened a new link to Tokyo in March and flights to Dakar in Senegal begin on September 1.

All four daily Emirates flights from New Zealand connect with EK141 to Madrid, which departs Dubai daily at 7.50am and arrives in Madrid at 1.45pm. EK 142 leaves the Spanish capital at 3.25pm and gets into Dubai at 12.30am the following day.

An Airbus A330-200 is being deployed on the route, offering 12 seats in First Class, 42 in Business and 183 in Economy.

It has been a busy summer for the airline. Aside from the FIFA World Cup and the new destination launches, Emirates also ordered 32 more Airbus A380s at the Berlin Air Show in June. Last month at the Farnborough Air Show, Engine Alliance GP7200 engines were ordered to power the additional super-jumbos and there was a new order for 30 more Boeing 777-300ERs. The total value of these orders comes to US$34.5 billion.

Emirates currently operates with a fleet of 149 aircraft including 11 Airbus A380s.

• The weekend also saw Emirates signal its commitment to support the growing trade and tourism relationship between Dubai and China with the arrival in Beijing of flight EK306, the first scheduled Airbus A380 service to China. Emirates will operate the A380 daily from Dubai to Beijing.

Currently Emirates operates double-daily services from Dubai each to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and daily services to Guangzhou; while the airline’s fleet of 11 Airbus A380s are currently operating on services from Dubai to London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Toronto, Seoul, Bangkok, Beijing, Jeddah, Sydney and Auckland.
