TravelSky Renews with Unisys in US$43M Deal to Support China’s Growing Aviation Industry

Contract includes private cloud services to enhance automation and flexibility in the data centre

TravelSky, the leading provider of information technology solutions for China’s air travel and tourism industry, has renewed its commitment to Unisys (NYSE:UIS) services and server technology in a major contract with Unisys China to support the transaction peaks driven by China’s growing aviation sector.

The US$43 million (NZ$60 million) deal, signed in the first quarter of 2010, includes the Unisys USAS Passenger Services Solution, two ClearPath Dorado Model 790 mainframes, additional metered processing capacity, infrastructure management suite and maintenance services, clustering hardware and EMC storage solutions.

In addition, Unisys is assisting TravelSky to implement a private cloud computing solution designed to provide improved automation, self diagnostics, server utilisation, compliance and ease of management within the data centre.

TravelSky operates the reservations and departure control systems used by China's air carriers and also maintains the global distribution system for China’s travel agencies. The firm relies on the Unisys USAS application and ClearPath servers as its core IT infrastructure to offer the Chinese airline industry a variety of mission-critical applications including an inventory control system, global distribution system and a departure control system.

With air travel growing rapidly in China, TravelSky needed increased IT capacity to support its customers. To meet the growing transaction demand, TravelSky has added two ClearPath Dorado Model 790 mainframes to its three existing ClearPath Dorado servers. The ClearPath mainframes are clustered together using Unisys Extended Transaction Capacity (XTC) capability to significantly increase transaction processing capacity compared to a one–host system.

Unisys will also assist TravelSky to implement a private cloud computing approach to increase the flexibility and cost-efficiency of its data centre.

“The Unisys private cloud approach allows us to gain the flexible operational benefits of cloud computing within the security of our own data centre,” said TravelSky vice president, Mr. Rong Gang. “Highly automated operations and immediate, as-needed self-service provisioning of resources means that our IT resources can be quickly matched to fluctuating business demand and the transaction peaks created by large scale events such as Expo 2010. This will also make our data centre easier to manage.”

“TravelSky has been a Unisys client for more than 25 years, and we’re delighted to be partnering with them in the next stage of their growth,” said Sue Carter, vice president, Global Commercial Industries, Unisys Asia Pacific. “With so many critical processes involved in the passenger, cargo, airline and airport aviation business, TravelSky needs a highly secure, scalable and flexible IT infrastructure to meet changing demands in logistics, passenger services and other mission-critical applications. Unisys ClearPath and USAS systems provide that platform.”

Unisys has more than 45 years experience providing advanced, mission-critical IT solutions to the aviation industry. Nineteen of the top 25 airlines – and more than 200 worldwide – rely on Unisys solutions. Asia Pacific aviation industry clients include Beijing Capital International Airport and Guangzhou International Baiyun Airport in China and Delhi International Airport Ltd in India.
