The 2010 NZ Petroleum Conference is hosting well-known petroleum taxation expert, Alex Kemp, to provide insights into the latest international trends in petroleum taxation and regulations.

Professor Alex Kemp will shed some light on what lessons New Zealand can learn from these trends during his keynote presentation at the three-day conference, which starts this Sunday, September 19.

Hosted by Crown Minerals, the 2010 NZ Petroleum Conference is being held at the SKYCITY Convention Centre. It concludes on Wednesday, September 22. The conference is the country’s premier event for the oil exploration and production industry. This year’s conference theme is Transformation; focusing on the role the oil industry could play in transforming New Zealand’s economy and how we can ensure that the country continues to be a highly attractive global destination for petroleum investment.

Professor Kemp’s considerable expertise and knowledge of petroleum economics is in demand around the world.

His research into petroleum economics has focused on licensing and taxation issues and he has published more than 200 papers and books on this subject.
He wrote the Official History of North Sea Oil and Gas, an in-depth study and analysis of the development of United Kingdom’s petroleum policies towards North Sea. He was provided full access to the UK government’s relevant archives to research this book.
In a section of this book he discusses the introduction of special taxation (Petroleum Revenue Tax and Supplementary Petroleum Duty) to increase the state’s share and also covers the lively debate over the use of the benefits of the large North Sea oil revenues.
Professor Kemp has been a consultant on petroleum contracts and legislation to many governments, the World Bank, the United Nations, various oil companies, the European Commission, the UK Know-How Fund and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

He was a specialist adviser to the UK House of Commons Select Committee on Energy from 1980 to 1992 and also during 2004 and 2009.

Professor Kemp is also an editorial adviser to many energy and other academic and professional journals.

In 1993 he was appointed by the UK Minister of Energy to the UK Government Energy Advisory Panel and was a member until 2003.

His consulting firm, Aupec is a recognised leader in energy sector economics, valuation and benchmarking. It advises governments and oil companies around the world.
