Jobs Growth Spreads to New Areas Despite National Pause

Data released today by SEEK New Zealand shows growth in new areas of the employment market as industries that have been slower to recruit in 2010 are now listing more new job ads.

This has been highlighted in a new addition to the most sought after occupations with the inclusion of Hair and Beauty roles, which has not entered the list before this year. There has also been a significant increase in Counselling and Social Work jobs listed in Auckland and Machine Operator roles in Canterbury.

Annemarie Duff, General Manager SEEK New Zealand, comments; Despite a slight dip of 2.4% in the overall number of new jobs listed in September there has been an increase in the numbers of jobs listed in some industries, there are 45% more Trades jobs available compared to this time last year§.

Ms Duff explains this is an indication that industries that have been hesitant in recruiting are now redressing their employment plans.

These are more encouraging signs of growth in new areas of the job market, and this is a trend we hope to see continue. This is a great chance for Jobseekers to be able move into industries or roles that have not been recruiting at this level earlier in the year.§

Colin Mathieson, Managing Director of Alpha Recruitment, confirms this; Industries that have been slower to pick up at the start of the year have seen an improvement in the number of new jobs available; for example in the last month we have had growth of over 20% in the number of office administration roles available.§

Ms Duff adds; At the start of the year the SEEK Satisfaction and Motivation survey found that 68% of Kiwis were looking for new employment options this year, and with a range of roles available at all levels this might provide the impetus for those ready for a change to move. With over 13,800 jobs listed on the site jobseekers can be sure to find what they are looking for.§

1. Information & Communications Technology Help Desk & IT Support
2. Call Centre/Customer Service Call Centre Operator
3. Retail & Consumer Products Retail Sales Assistant
4. Administration Reception
5. Accounting Accounts Clerk / Admin

Septembers top five most competitive occupations remain the same as August with the only change being the position of Reception and Sales Assistants reversing. Help Desk & IT Support has maintained the position in the top five most competitive occupation since the start of the year.
Septembers top five most sought after employees:
1. Healthcare & Medical Medical Specialists
2. Information & Communications Technology - Consultants
3. Government/ Defence Government
4. Engineering Civil / Structural Engineering
5. Trades & Services Hair & Beauty Services

Medical Specialists are the most sought after employees for the month of September, with these roles receiving the least amount of applications per advertisement. An unusual addition is Beauty and Service jobs, which have not previously been seen on the top five list this year.
