Police action necessary to keep NZ attractive for investment

Straterra The enforcement by police of a 200-metre buffer between protesters and the Petrobras vessel Orient Explorer is the right action for New Zealand, Straterra says.

Straterra CEO Chris Baker said today “This action is absolutely necessary to maintain New Zealand’s international reputation as an attractive place to do business. Overseas investment is vital to New Zealand’s economic prosperity, be it in the wine industry, agriculture, forestry, or in energy and minerals.”

Mr Baker said he accepted the protesters have legitimate concerns and these should be taken up with the Government, not with a petroleum company operating lawfully.

“Straterra supports Environment Minister Nick Smith’s intention to introduce environmental legislation for the Exclusive Economic Zone before any drilling starts. We understand that the Government is placing a high priority on introducing EEZ legislation.”

The Minister’s views on EEZ environmental legislation were aired today on Morning Report, RNZ. Straterra attended last week the launch of a policy paper by the Environmental Defence Society on ocean governance for New Zealand, with the assistance of the Minister. Straterra has posted a blog supporting the paper’s recommendations: http://www.straterra.co.nz/Straterra-blog

“We also support the Government’s review of health and safety legislation in the EEZ for offshore petroleum operations, which has a lot to say about managing the risk of oil spill,” Mr Baker said. “It is clear more resources need to be put into this area.”

“Recall that Deep Horizon was one of around 3000 rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, and that this disaster occurred after a chain of human errors. We need to understand what happened and be confident that we have appropriate legislation and safeguards in New Zealand.”

“The Waitangi Tribunal has provided recommendations to the Government for improved iwi involvement in decision-making within the Crown petroleum regime. The Government is considering the matter, as is appropriate. That looks like a good process and we suggest the protesters get involved.”
