Briquetting Plant passes first hurdle

13 May 2011

Solid Energy Demonstration Briquetting Plant passes first hurdle

Solid Energy received formal advice from the Gore District Council yesterday that its resource consents for land use for a small domestic briquetting plant at its Mataura Mine site will be non-notified. Environment Southland has also confirmed that air discharge and water consents will be progressed on a limited notification basis.

Solid Energy Group Manager New Developments, Brett Gamble, says he is pleased that the councils have dealt with this plant solely on its own merits – as a small domestic briquetting plant to supply existing coal customers.

“We’re looking forward to sharing our detailed plans with affected parties, our neighbours and the community during the next few weeks. The plant, which is wholly owned by Solid Energy, will be located on industrial zoned land at our existing Mataura Mine site to produce briquettes using locally mined lignite from our New Vale Mine.

The final decisions on whether to grant the resource consents are still yet to be made by the Gore District Council, and Environment Southland.
