Wellington Gelato Company Scoops Ice Cream Oscar
Wellington entrepreneur Nathan Meyer has won a gold award for his Mango Sorbet at the 2011 New Zealand Ice Cream Awards.
Mr Meyer’s Mango Sorbet was commended at the awards in Queenstown, which are considered the ice cream industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.
The win marks a successful year for his company Carrello del Gelato, which has already secured a number of deals with leading supermarkets and other retail outlets.
He started the Newtown business seven years ago to provide authentic Italian gelato to a growing market of ice cream-hungry Kiwis.
Carrello del Gelato carefully sources high quality local ingredients to create the award-winning sorbet.
“When I started making gelato in 2004, I wanted to re-create the magic of genuine Italian gelato right here in New Zealand,” said Mr Meyer.
“Our homemade recipes have landed us wholesale deals with a variety of retailers, along with countless requests for our street carts to sell delicious gelato at events across the country.”
He added: “The success we’ve had is a testament to the business delivering on our vision of authenticity. This NZ Ice Cream Gold Award reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff.”
Carrello del Gelato began making sorbet in 2004 to complement their large range of gelato, which has included custom-made gelato flavours at their client’s request.
The 2011 New Zealand Ice Cream Awards has run for 15 years, and is hosted by the New Zealand Ice Cream Manufacturers Association Inc. Ice cream, gelato, and sorbet makers from across New Zealand can enter in any of the 12 categories available. The awards were announced on May 26 2011.
