KiwiRail services after the 13 June
2011 earthquakes
KiwiRail has today suspended
all train services between Ashburton, Springfield and
Waipara in the South Island because of the latest
earthquakes in Christchurch.
KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn said all staff working in affected areas have been located and are safe.
He said the magnitude of the earthquakes was such that all tracks and structures supporting the lines need to be inspected before services can resume. Initial inspections show that freight services could resume on the main lines north and south tomorrow, but it may take some days before freight services to Lyttleton resume.
Passengers on today’s Tranz Alpine have been transferred from the train at Rolleston and are going by bus to Christchurch.
Mr Quinn said tomorrow’s Tranz Alpine service has been replaced by buses.
More information will be posted as it comes to hand.
